Garage Door Cables: The Component Almost Nobody Looks At Until It Fails

Ask a homeowner to point at the springs on their garage door and most can manage it. Ask them to point at the cables and you usually get a pause.

The lift cables are the steel wire ropes running from the bottom corners of the door up to drums mounted on the torsion shaft above the opening. They are the link between the counterbalance system and the door itself, and they carry its full weight every single cycle. They are also, unlike springs, cheap, quiet, and easy to inspect, which makes the fact that almost nobody inspects them slightly unfortunate.

How the Cable System Works

On a torsion spring setup, the springs wind and unwind on a shaft above the door. At each end of that shaft is a cable drum, a grooved wheel. The cable runs from the drum down the side of the door and attaches to a bottom bracket fixed to the lowest section.

As the door opens, the springs unwind and turn the shaft, the drums wind the cable up, and the door rises. As it closes, the reverse happens. The two cables must wind and unwind at exactly the same rate or the door goes out of square.

Extension spring systems use a different arrangement, with cables running through pulleys along the horizontal tracks, but the principle and the failure modes are broadly the same.

Why Cables Fail

Cables fail for four main reasons, and all four are visible on inspection.

Fatigue. A cable flexes over a drum thousands of times. Individual strands eventually break, and once one goes the load redistributes to the rest and the process accelerates.

Corrosion. This is the big one. The lower end of the cable sits close to the slab, where water pools, road salt collects, and humidity concentrates. Corrosion there weakens the cable exactly where it carries the most concentrated load, at the bottom bracket attachment.

Misalignment. A door running out of square, or a drum that has slipped on the shaft, makes one cable wind unevenly. It rubs where it should not and wears through in a specific spot.

And collateral damage. When a spring breaks, the sudden release frequently damages a cable at the same moment. This is why cables are always checked after a spring failure.

What to Look For

The inspection takes about a minute and requires only your eyes. Never handle the cables, which are under load even with the door closed.

Broken strands standing away from the body of the cable, sometimes described as fraying or birdcaging. Even one is a replacement signal.

Rust, particularly in the lower two feet and at the bottom bracket.

Slack on one side while the door is closed. Both cables should be taut.

A door that meets the floor at an angle, one corner touching before the other, which usually means uneven cable tension.

And any visible kink or flattened section, which indicates the cable has been pinched or has jumped its drum at some point.

What Happens When One Snaps

Cable failure is sudden and it is not gentle. The side that loses its cable drops instantly while the other side stays supported. The door racks out of square, rollers pop out of their tracks, and the assembly can end up jammed at an angle or, in the worst case, coming down hard on one side.

If a car is in the doorway when it happens, or a person is walking under the door, the outcome is considerably worse than an inconvenience. This is why frayed cables get written up so bluntly in home inspection reports.

Why It Is Not a DIY Repair

Cable replacement requires releasing and re-setting spring tension, which is the same off-limits territory as spring work itself. The cables must also be set to exactly equal length and wound correctly onto their drums, and the drums have to be positioned precisely on the shaft.

Get the cable lengths uneven and the door runs permanently out of square, which chews through rollers, wears the tracks, and eventually goes off track. Get the drum position wrong and the cable can jump off entirely under load.

A professional garage door cable replacement is a routine visit, usually completed in a single call, and it should include an inspection of the drums, bottom brackets, springs and rollers, since these components fail as a group.

Always in Pairs

Both cables should be replaced together, without exception.

They were installed at the same time, they have run the same number of cycles, and they have been exposed to the same conditions. If one has degraded to the point of failure, the other is not far behind. Replacing a single cable also risks a mismatch in length or stretch characteristics, which reintroduces the squareness problem the repair was meant to solve.

Making Them Last

Cables are consumable, but their working life varies enormously with conditions, and most of those conditions are controllable.

Keep water off the slab at the base of the door. A functioning bottom seal, a threshold seal where the driveway pitches inward, and a downspout that discharges away from the garage all directly extend cable life by keeping the lower end dry.

Keep the door running square. A door that closes crooked is wearing one cable faster than the other, and correcting the alignment is a far cheaper intervention than the failure it prevents.

Do not lubricate cables. Grease attracts grit, and grit accelerates wear. Lubricate rollers, hinges, bearings and springs, and leave the cables alone.

And look at them twice a year, at the same time as everything else. It takes a minute, it requires no tools, and it catches the one component that gives clear warning and almost never gets one.
